Board certification is a long multi-phase process consisting of written exams, verbal exams, and presentations of the doctors clinical treatment of patients. Only a small percentage of orthodontists complete this rigorous examination process, and Dr. Shotell has become the only Board Certified Orthodontist in the Mother Lode.
Many dentists practice orthodontics using brackets and clear aligners, but only a small percentage of doctors attend the formal education that it takes to become an orthodontist. Of the doctors that become an orthodontist only a small handful pursue the path to become a board-certified orthodontist.

After practicing as a dentist for several years Dr. Shotell returned to school at Loma Linda University where she became an orthodontist. With a life long commitment to learning and education Dr. Shotell undertook the process to become a board certified orthodontist. The exam process was rigorous with written exams, verbal exams with a panel of orthodontist, and finally presenting her own patient treatment to the board to see the results that Dr. Shotell is able to achieve with her patients.

Together with Dr. Michael Scherer, Dr. Shotell is working to bring quality and comprehensive dental treatment to the people to Tuolumne County. Both Dr. Shotell and Dr. Scherer are the only specialists in the Mother Lode to hold board certification in there respective specialties, and comprise the only multi-specialty practice in Tuoloumne County.
Dr. Shotell has been recognized in Ortho Practice US for bringing her specialty to a rural community. Sonora Modern Dentistry & Orthodontics provides some of the most state of the art technology available in the world. The practice proudly utilizes intra-oral scanners to avoid “goo free” impressions, 3D radiographs, and 3D printers. Dr. Shotell utilizes this amazing combination of digital technology to optimize patient comfort and improve clinical treatment outcomes.
Dr. Shotell lectures nationally and internationally on orthodontics and modern dental technology. She was honored to present at the Orto 2018 National Orthodontics Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Shotell enjoys sharing her knowledge to help other doctors embrace technology and improve the treatment of patients all over the world.
